Roberto Antolini: Having a “stanza e mensa” [room and table] in Palazzo Pizzini in the mid-1700s: Giuseppe Felice Matteo Givanni, a priest/rationalist intellectual, and a dialect poet singer of the Rovereto silk era.

Giuseppe Felice Givanni was an 18th-century rationalist priest from Rovereto. He was also a poet, who in his short stories written in dialect verse (almost all still unpublished) narrates – in a playful and metaphorical way – life and especially the conflicts of the Roveretano silk age. Around the mid-18th century, he was the chaplain of the Pizzini family and tutor to the children of Baron Gian Giulio Pizzini (Gian Giacomo and Orazio, who would become important figures of their time). During the pastoral visit of the bishop to the Church of San Marco in 1750, Givanni explains that he has – for these services – a “room and table” in the Pizzini Palace.

Roberto Antolini
Roberto Antolini, a graduate in philosophy, librarian, and archivist, was born in Trento in 1950. In addition to ‘Towards the Brenner’, he published the novel ‘Ivan the Terrorist’ (Robin Editions, 2009), and edited the volume ‘Explosive, Sharp, and Bright Books: Artistic Vanguards and the Book between Futurism and the Artist’s Book’ (Nicolodi, 2005).
